Scaling potential of a Doha beachwell at different operating temperatures

ABSTRACT

 

 Different scaling species such as calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, barium sulfate, calcium fluoride, strontium sulfate and magnesium hydroxide, are expected to precipitate in reverse osmosis (RO) systems and multistage flash (MSF) plants. The scaling potential of beachwell seawater at Doha, Kuwait was studied using scale-control testing and X-ray diffraction (XRD) for low-operating temperatures. The scaling potential was also examined at higher temperatures up to 160°C. The percentages of precipitation of calcium, magnesium, sulfate and bicarbonate were calculated for each operating temperature. At low temperature calcium carbonate was found to precipitate up to  26.7% at 70°C, and the percentage of precipitation was increased  to  39.8% at 80°C after only 120 minutes of operation even at very low conversions, However, at high temperature, magnesium hydroxide was precipitated  at 120°C and precipitation increased  to 20% at 160°C. Calcium sulfate showed the highest precipitation at high temperature, with 10 % precipitation at 120°C and 50% precipitation at 160°C. The results of these experiments will help MSF plant operators to convert to high top-brine temperature operation, which reduces capital and water production costs.
