Contribution to the geomorphology of the Shibam- Kawkaban area, Yemen Arab Republic

Auther : NABlL ABOUL ELA

Department of Geology, Faculty of Science, Cairo University, Giza, Egypt

ABSTRACT

The geomorphology of the Shibam and Kawkaban area is mainly controlled by relief, lithology, structure and climate. Mechanical weathering has played a conspicuous role in rock fracturing and disintegration, whereas chemical weathering in the limestone country has resulted in the formation of minor karst features. Mass movements are expressed in the rockfall, rockslides, and slumping along steep slopes and stone facades which dominate much of the area.

Although rainfall is only about 350 mm annually, there is a well developed drainage network guided mainly by structures in the underlying bed rock. Quantitative analysis was carried out for some of the major wadis. Four physiographic units can be distinguished; the western sandstone plateau, the limestone upland area, the eastern lava plain and the wadis.
