Separation of zinc ion from solutions using polyacrylonitrile and acrylonitrile-charcoal composite

ABSTRACT

 

Zinc ions were successfully separated using polyacrylonitrile or acrylonitrileecharcoal composite. Hydrogen ion concentration appears to be the strongest factor affecting the process of separation. At pH 8, zinc ions were completely separated from a hexammine buffer solution. The separation of zinc was successful in the presence of relatively high concentrations of various foreign cations and anions which may exist in small quantities in sea and fresh waters. It was found that an acrylonitrile-charcoal composite has a higher efficiency for separation than polyacrylonitrile at any pH or temperature.
