Strength and toughness of vermiculite concrete reinforced with fibres or film network

ABSTRACT

 

Cube and slab specimens were made from lightweight concrete using exfoliated vermiculite aggregate. Different specimens were reinforced with polypropylene fibres, steel fibres and multiple layers of polypropylene film network. The volume fraction of reinforcement and the fibre geometry were varied while holding the concrete mix proportions constant.

The cube and slab specimens were tested in compression and flexure, respectively. The results indicated that the compressive and flexural strengths increased with an increase in fibre length or volume fraction of reinforcement. Load-deflection curves for the reinforced slabs indicated considerable improvements in their toughness. The highest flexural strength and toughness resulted when the slabs were reinforced with polypropylene film network. At failure, these slabs developed multiple cracks, unlike slabs reinforced with short fibres which developed a single crack.
