ABSTRACT

The distribution of thermotolerant actinomycetes in seven plant communities in the desert of Kuwait was studied. The results showed considerable differences in counts among communities. Maximal counts were obtained from the rhizosphere soil of Cyperus conglomerates community and from the non-rhizosphere soil of Rhanterium epapposum community. No thermotolerant actinomycetes were recorded from the salt marsh communities of Nitraria retusa and Zygophyllum coccineum. From the Cyperus, Rhanterium and Cornulaca Leucacntha communities, 118 actinomycete isolates were obtained. Of these, 108 isolates belonged to the genus Streptomyces, while 9 isolates belonged to the genus Streptosporangium. Streptomyces isolates belonged to the Grey series (24 isolates), the Red series (26 isolates), the Blue series (42 isolates) and the Green series (16 isolates). Identification to species level showed that four species could be identified, two from the Red series (S. tauricus and S.toxytricini) and two from the Blue series (S. coeruleorubidis and S. lanatus). The most frequent species was S.lanatus, being identified from all three communities. In each community particular series and/or species were absent. All of the actinomycete isolates had a growth temperature range of 30-50° C.
